I’ve been saying for some time now that the location of Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus will mean as much - if not more - to Alexandria than Amazon’s new headquarters in Arlington. The Innovation Campus will bring together hundreds of new graduate students, dozens of new faculty members, and numerous industry partners and will be a magnet for leading tech talent, research, and education.
Case in point - FutureHAUS. FutureHAUS is an award winning solar home designed by Virginia Tech students and faculty now on display in Potomac Yard for a limited time.
Perforated exterior aluminum panels wrap the house in a moveable privacy screen.
Built for the 2018 Solar Decathlon in Dubai and attracting 60 entries from around the world, the 900 sq. ft house features sustainable energy, easy assembly, and smart technology. Think moveable walls, recycled water, Lego-like building pieces, lights that ‘remember’ what intensity you like, adjustable counters and cabinets, and the list goes on. Both my five year old grandson and my 50 year old son-in-law were in awe - a house for all ages!
Virginia Tech was the only American team selected to compete and took first place in the overall competition.
The home will be on display in Alexandria until August 16. Public tours are offered on Thursday and Saturday from 11am to 5pm and on Friday from 11am to 8pm.
